My Take
In this episode of Lightning Leaders, I sit down with Justin Mohabir, a young leader who made a decision many seasoned executives delay.
He walked away from football before it was taken from him.
Not out of certainty, but out of awareness.
We explore what it means to lead without a title, how mentorship actually works for this generation, and why presence may be the most underutilized leadership skill today.
Justin brings a perspective that is not weighed down by legacy thinking. He is building while learning, leading while listening, and choosing direction before external validation shows up.
If you have ever felt the tension between who you were and who you are becoming, this conversation will meet you there.
3 Obscure Leadership Lessons from Justin
End it while it still works
Most leaders wait for failure to force change. Justin made his move while things were still intact. That level of awareness protects future growth.
Build credibility before credentials show up
He is not waiting for a title to lead. Through conversations, initiatives, and consistency, he is creating influence in real time.
Presence is a performance advantage
“Be where your feet are planted” is not a mindset line. It is a discipline. Leaders lose effectiveness when they are physically present but mentally somewhere else.
The best marketing ideas come from marketers who live it.
That’s what this newsletter delivers.
The Marketing Millennials is a look inside what’s working right now for other marketers. No theory. No fluff. Just real insights and ideas you can actually use—from marketers who’ve been there, done that, and are sharing the playbook.
Every newsletter is written by Daniel Murray, a marketer obsessed with what goes into great marketing. Expect fresh takes, hot topics, and the kind of stuff you’ll want to steal for your next campaign.
Because marketing shouldn’t feel like guesswork. And you shouldn’t have to dig for the good stuff.
2 Reasons Every Leader Needs This
Timing shapes trajectory
Waiting too long to pivot often costs more than making the move early. Leaders who act with awareness stay ahead of disruption.
The next generation is already leading differently
If you are not paying attention, you risk building systems and cultures that do not connect with the leaders coming up behind you.
One Action Step for Your Team
At your next team meeting, ask this question:
“What is one thing we are holding onto that is still working, but no longer serving where we are going?”
Give space for honest answers. Do not rush to fix it.
Just listen.
Awareness is where better leadership decisions begin.

Invest in yourself. Invest in your company. Invest in your business.
This past week I made that investment and traveled to Boston for Pharma Forum.
As I continue building my company, I challenge myself to get clear. I sat down and built a matrix to identify the top industries I speak to, the ones I enjoy, and the ones where I know I bring real value. Pharmaceuticals rose right to the top.
I have spoken to pharma companies several times, but this experience gave me a deeper appreciation. The people in that space are there because they care. They are part of a process that can take years, sometimes decades, and cost billions, with no guarantee the drug even makes it to market.
And yet they keep going.
Because on the other side of all that effort is the opportunity to change, or even save, a life.
That part is personal for me. A drug like Remdesivir helped save my wife’s life. So this was not just another conference; it mattered.
The trip also reminded me how powerful relationships are.

I got to see my friend Mitch on stage as the keynote speaker. I reconnected with one of my oldest friends, Andrew Dudley. I spent time with my friend Ralph Green.

And yes, I walked away as the Rock, Paper, Scissors champion.
Here is what I know. My message fits this audience. It works.
But sometimes it is not enough to know it. You have to step into the room, be present, and make sure people know what you bring.
I will keep you posted on how it all unfolds.
Go forth - inspire your world.
See you next Tuesday!
