Organizations that struggle often have an execution problem that masquerades as a performance problem.

And guess what? The deeper issue is not performance.

It is an identity threat.

When you are unsure where you stand, you begin protecting your image instead of contributing your intelligence.

Jamie described walking into meetings already imagining failure, job loss, and disruption before the conversation even began. The fear was not the meeting. The fear was being exposed as not enough. Yet, he was enough, because he was in the room.

I remember a similar experience when I was invited in as part of a special advisory board to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton. It was intimidating for sure. But my life experiences are what got me in the room.

You cannot discount your experience.

That same pattern lives inside organizations. People hesitate, withhold ideas, avoid hard conversations, and wait for permission because they are protecting belonging.
