This week on the podcast I had the privilege of speaking with Retired Four-Star General Paul Funk II.

General Funk spent decades leading in environments where hesitation was not an option. At one point he commanded the largest coalition force in the world, seventy-two nations working together toward one mission.

Imagine the complexity.

Different cultures.
Different priorities.
Different leaders.

Yet the mission still required clear decisions and coordinated action.

During our conversation, one idea kept surfacing.

Great leadership does not happen when conditions are perfect.

It happens when the moment demands clarity.

That is the moment of the Lightning Leader.

Here are three insights from General Funk that stood out.

3 Leadership Insights

  1. Leaders must decide before they feel comfortable.

General Funk talked about operating in environments where the information was never complete.

If he had waited for perfect clarity, nothing would have moved.

Instead, leaders must decide when they have enough understanding of the situation to move forward, then adjust as new information arrives.

Many organizations stall because leaders are waiting for certainty that will never come.

  2. Leadership means being “positively intrusive”.

One of the phrases General Funk used was being positively intrusive with your people.

That means leaders cannot remain distant.

They must lean into their teams.

    Ask questions.
    Stay engaged.
    Understand what people are facing.

Not to micromanage, but to ensure the mission stays aligned and people feel supported.

    Great leaders do not hover.

But they also do not disappear.

  3. Your real job as a leaders is developing people.

At one point in his career General Funk oversaw the training and development of hundreds of thousands of soldiers every year.

    He emphasized something powerful.

The leader’s job is not just execution.

The leader’s job is building the next generation of leaders.

When leaders focus only on results, the organization becomes fragile.

When leaders develop people, the organization becomes resilient.

2 Leadership Concerns If You Ignore This

Indecision quietly becomes your culture

When leaders hesitate, teams begin to hesitate.

People stop acting and start waiting.

Momentum disappears.

Distance between leader and team grows

If leaders are not engaged with their people, small issues grow into large problems.

Being disconnected from the team is one of the fastest ways leadership influence erodes.

1 Action Step

Ask yourself this question this week.

Where might I need to be more positively intrusive with my team?

One conversation.
One check in.
One moment of engagement.

That is often where leadership impact begins.

Where in the World is JR

Tomorrow I will be in Chicago taping the Whitney Reynolds Show, and I am excited for that conversation.

This week I will also have the honor of serving as the Public Address Announcer for the CHSAA Final Four Basketball Championships on Thursday and Friday.

Right after that I will be back on the microphone for the CHSAA Harrison High School Track and Field Meet.

Last week I had the privilege of delivering the Amputate to Elevate keynote for ALHI, the Association for Luxury Hotels International, at the Broadmoor. A tremendous group of leaders shaping the future of luxury hospitality.

And this past weekend I had the honor of serving as event emcee for Adaptive Sports in San Diego, celebrating athletes who continue to redefine what is possible.

Moments like these remind me why leadership matters.

When people elevate, communities elevate.
